If you loved The Amplified Bible released by the Lockman Foundation 50 years ago, you’re probably going to love The Expanded Bible offered by Thomas Nelson Publishers. After all, “expanded” is just a synonym for “amplified,” and both follow the same plan of inserting words in the Bible text to clarify the meaning. You can score a free copy of the New Testament of The Expanded Bible in PDF format.

The Expanded Bible from Thomas Nelson Publishers

The Expanded Bible from Thomas Nelson Publishers

The Amplified Bible was first released in 1958 and was published by Zondervan. It was a unique translation. Nelson’s expression of the old classic is a new translation too, but they both come from the same mold.

On his blog, Wayne Hastings, Senior Vice President and Group Publisher of the Bible Division for Thomas Nelson Publishers, said he thought The Expanded Bible was different because:

• It meets the needs of the contemporary student of the Bible by combining devotional reading and in-depth study in a completely new way. Users can now study the Bible while they read with study aids and resources placed in-line with the text of the Bible.

• It joins Bible text with traditional wordings, explanatory comments, additional wordings, literal meanings and expanded word definitions, all integrated within the text of the Scripture.

• It offers readers a unique Bible study experience by making them a part of the process and decisions made by scholars while developing a translation

John 3:16-18
The Amplified Bible
16 For God so greatly loved and early prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten [a]unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life.17 For God did not send the Son into the world in order to judge (to reject, to condemn, to pass sentence on) the world, but that the world might find salvation and be made safe and sound through Him.18 He who believes in Him [who clings to, trusts in, relies on Him] is not judged [he who trusts in Him never comes up for judgment; for him there is no rejection, no condemnation–he incurs no damnation]; but he who does not believe (cleave to, rely on, trust in Him) is judged already [he has already been convicted and has already received his sentence] because he has not believed in and trusted in the name of the only begotten Son of God. [He is condemned for refusing to let his trust rest in Christ’s name.]
