Many people think we are living in a post-Christian era. That’s not actually the case because there are 1.9 billion Christian believers in the world. Each of them is eager to learn more about the values they hold dear.
Christian writers have a responsibility to share their message with others. It ‘s not only a matter of winning others to Christ, but it’s also a matter of building up and encouraging those who already believe. There are wonderful opportunities for all Christian writers, not only to share their message, but also to have an opportunity to receive an income from their Christian writing projects. As the Bible says, “The worker is worthy of his wages.” (Luke 10:7)
If you desire to share your faith with others, you’ll find a ready market for your work if it meets a minimum standard of quality. There are a lot of Christian writers engaged in a kind of automatic writing, thinking God approves it and man will enjoy it, but this is not the case. Writing for the Christian market requires spiritual insight, tenacity, and a commitment to meeting the needs of individuals.
How can you be an effective Christian writer? Here are some important suggestions:
1. You must have a story to tell. Whether your story is fiction or non-fiction really doesn’t matter. But you must have a passion to tell your story in a way that will inspire and encourage others. Throughout history people have been beaten down by the problems of life, and they are looking for encouragement. If you have a story that will lift them from their ordinary lives and give them hope, then you will be an effective Christian writer.
2. You must have a sense of what is good and bad when it comes to written communication. Too many Christian writers think they are “inspired,” but the quality of the writing is far too low to be acceptable. While I believe that Christian writers must write from the heart, as the Spirit leads, there are practical considerations. One of these considerations is some objectivity about the quality of the work completed. Sadly, most writers, Christian or not, lack that objectivity, so they must rely on the judgment of others. Let others read what you have written and listen carefully to what they have to say. Undoubtedly, your mother will tell you that you have done wonderful work, but you will only benefit a few listen to more harsh critics.
3. You will only be effective if people want to read what you have written. Too many Christian authors write about what interests them. This is not totally taboo, but you cannot expect to be widely read unless you are able to touch a chord in the lives of others. You must know the ways of the human heart to be able to touch it, and people will only want to read what you have written if you have done exactly that.
It’s a wonderful thing to be known as a writer. In my mind, it’s even a more wonderful thing to be known as a Christian writer. Why? Because Christian writers have the potential to convey hope to the masses. And if there is anything that the masses need today, it’s hope. You can be an effective Christian writer if you have a story to tell, are concerned about the quality of your writing, and if you write about things that people want to read.
