A big Christian bookstore follows in the footsteps of independents. Even with denominational backing, the store was forced to close in the current challenging economy.
The Pathway Bookstore, serving the greater Cleveland, TN area, as well as churches nation-wide affiliated with the Church of God (CoG), is closing its doors on January 14, 2009 due to lack of profitability.
According to local TV station WTVC, “Pathway Press has struggled with the economic issues that affect everyone at this time. Due to the uncertainty of the economy, and after much deliberation, the leadership of Pathway Press, its Board of Directors and leadership of Church of God have made the difficult decision to close Pathway Bookstore, effective immediately.”
The present 30,000 square foot store was opened in 1999 at a cost of $2.5 million. Previously, the store had operated out of smaller quarters ajacent to the Pathway Press, the publication arm of the Penecostal denomination.
Pathway Press, and the Pathway online bookstore (www.pathwaybookstore.com) will continue to serve the denomination and wider Christian community.
